Weighing LETTUCE -- May be a bit Anal but .....

I've googled the heck out of how to measure lettuce. So many sites say "don't bother, they have so few calories", but when doing Atkins/Induction, I WILL BOTHER. I MUST bother.

I've read "pack as much as you can in one cup" -- well, I can cram 1/2 of a bag in 1 cup! Then I think I read somewhere, don't pack it.

I would like to hear what you think ... when 15-20g carbs must come from foundation veggies, it's important to do this thing right.

I'm guessing measuring the lettuce in grams would be most accurate? I read that 2 Cups = 85grams, or 1 Cup Romaine is 47grams.

You are not alone. I weigh EVERYTHING! I tend to use grams for most things and ounces for meat. I wish at times that Atkins had used weight instead of volume for measurements. It's more time consuming, but also more precise.

I get fresh express salads and they read serving size is 85 g with 15 cal 0 fat and 1 gram of protein. I weigh everything even things that say 11 chips and ect.

I am on Adkins (on second week of induction) and I stopped measuring my lettuce. Romaine lettuce is what I use and when I enter it on this site, it does not register any net carbs at all. So I'm confused as to why lettuce should be measured. Any ideas on this?

Try going on the adkins website and see what they have on it

I went on the atkins site snd romaine letteus only has a .07 gram of carbs in it

Yes, I kept looking further into this; and knowing that lettuce is so low in netcarbs, I still plan on weighing it. My scale weighs in ounces, pounds and grams. I'll keep weighing it. Every netcarb matters to me, especially when we have to aim for that 12-15g of foundation veggies each day. I love how broccoli and cauliflower shoots it up nicely :)

I'll sometimes eyeball spinach, but only because I had been weighing it long enough to get an accurate feel for it. By the way, spinach and kale will get your net carbs up fast too, and with more micronutrients. Finely-chopped brussels sprouts quickly fried in butter are sortof rice-like, up there with riced cauliflower for veggie sides that aren't... you know... salad again.

Imjinc2k, yes, I'm trying to get in higher carb counts for my FV. I was wondering tonight...can I lose weight even if I don't have the recommended 12-15g FV? I don't see why not?

You can, but depending on what else you're eating, and how you cook your meat, over time it might make you sick. Without kale I started to get cramps in my legs and feet - potassium deficiency, so be mindful of micronutrients as well as macronutrients. You can get some of the stuff from homemade broth and gravies etc, but the nutrient content varies depending on what the animal itself was fed. We also can't live without the bacteria and fungi in our digestive system, so some of those greens are to keep them alive and healthy.

I don't know if this will be helpful but a food scale might be your most accurate way of keeping track of amount and calorie count.

Ladybea - yeah, that's what I'm doing; I'm glad my scale weighs in lbs., ozs as well as grams. Grams is SO accurate. imjinc2k - Yeah, I don't wanna be sick that's for sure. I'll do my best with the veggies. They get a little sickening after a while; eating the same ole things; I've decided to venture out and try out new veggies i normally wouldn't eat. Ones of course, that are acceptable for induction.
