Cyclist people! I have a question. I'm having some nerve damage in my hand from biking. My pinky and ring finger will go numb while riding sometimes, so I adjust until feeling comes back, and it just kinda cycles like that.

Yesterday I noticed that I'm losing grip strength in those fingers now as well, so obviously I need to modify something. I'm taking my bike to the shop later today to get the fit checked, but honestly I don't have a lot of faith in the guy that runs that shop.

I know that I'm hurting the ulnar nerve, but I'm not sure the best ways to prevent that. It doesn't hurt, it's just causing issues with dexterity off the bike. For example, typing this is taking a while due to my pinky being dumb.

Maybe the bike shop can adjust the handlebar column to be a little higher, then you aren't leaning and putting weight as far forward? I sometimes lock my elbows when my back get fatigued although I don't get the numbness, I just get really tight shoulder muscles. I really miss my old ram's horn road bike where there were two ways to grip the handlebars depending on how hard you were cycling. Good luck!

Bike setup. Padded gloves. Change hand positions frequently. Unload weight off hands. Unlock elbows. Engage shoulders, upper back and core. Stand up and pedal frequently. Mountain bike or road bike handlebars?

Road bike. I do have padded gloves, but I ordered some new ones with thicker padding. Did new handlebar tape that was more padded as well. I think my reach is too long though, so I'm going to ask about shorter stems. I find my elbows locking up frequently.

Yea, I guess I should expect the numbness along with general discomfort, but it's the lack of mobility that's got me concerned. I don't want to do any permanent damage to my nerves, especially since I've been riding almost every day.

The numbness in your fingers is caused by poor positioning on the bike, i.e., you slump far too much and rely on your hands to hold you up. Long-term solution is to work on your ABS and Lower Back to hold you in a better position. Short-term solution is to replace your handle-bars with ones better suited for your current style. Look for handle-bars with a "Flat Top" (Stradalli, and Oval Concepts for example...)

also check you wrist positioning. My hands tend to go numb at times too. Also when I used to ride motorcycles. I wouldn't worry that it's nerve damage - its more related to circulation. I don't fasten the velcro on my gloves anymore - I just slip them on. Do you have Aero bars? you can put weight on forearms for periods of time with those.

Good luck with the changes - looks like great suggestions from others. I get numbness even on short rides of 10 miles. I am no biker so....

Don't gut it out and ignore the numbness. I had a fellow rider who know only rides a recumbent since he wouldn't listen and never took his bike into someone willing to work with him on adjustment.

Yea, definitely gotta find some sort of fix for this. Couldn't even hold my chopsticks to eat sushi at lunch :(

Sounds like a bike fit issue to me! Possibly some posture also, but that is largely driven by bike fit. A bit of numbness is not out of the ordinary. If I am increasing distance or havent ridden in a while, I have to periodically shake my hands to get circulation back/ numbness gone. If no confidence in your bike guy, suggest you go to a different bike shop/mechanic.

+1 on bike fit, and I double wrap my handle bars.
