I did manage to do an hour of moderate paced-walking last night while reading "The Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton on my iPad. I figured I might as well be moving a little while reading to relax instead of just reclining on the couch.

I intended to once again go to bed early so I could get up and do Couch to 5K this morning, but since I did sit on the couch after my walk...that plan didn't work. I'll walk tonight though.

An Oprah rerun came on after 10pm about Vegan eating and I couldn't pull myself away. I am definitely not a Vegan, but I did try it for 30 days a few years back. Ultimately, the main thing that holds me back is that I love the taste of meat. In addition to that though, I found during my experiment that I was spending $100 a week at local health-food Co-op where I normally get groceries for $30-$40 a week, and I am an on-the-go person that can't ALWAYS avoid fast food or pre-packaged foods. With all that said, I did feel much better on a Vegan diet. Even better still when I cut out gluten. But I have an American appetite. I love anything with too much fat, sugar, and meat...

I am also a huge animal lover, and the truth is... I can't stomach it when I think of where my meat really comes from. But our grocery stores with their generally clean displays and cellophane wrapping makes it so easy to distance myself from the fact that my hamburger was ever a living creature with emotions.

I'm a bit torn. But also realistic... I don't think I will ever be likely of going fully "Animal-free" in my diet. I love cheese too much. But I think I will make efforts to cut way back. Mainly my efforts will be to think more about what I am ordering when I am out, and try to prepare my meals at home more often and consume WAAYYY more fruits and veggies. I already only cook meat at home on very rare occasion and don't use much real milk. We'll see where this goes...

I could not watch that Oprah. I saw the commercials for it and knew I would be sticking my head in the sand. I also know if I had to kill anything to eat I would definitely be a vegetarian. I actually was for 7 years, but I was terribly bad at it and kind of chunky too. Lots of pasta and bread and all that good stuff. I had a few too many beers at a baseball game and gave in and ate a bratwurst and that was the end of vegetarianism. I've now gone to the other extreme and am following high protein, high fat and low carb. I've never felt better. Also, how do you walk and read? I try and try but it makes me dizzy.

I find it is much easier to read on the treadmill with an e-reader because of the back light and the fact that you aren't fighting with pages turning and not staying back. Typically if I am reading, I go at quite a slow pace, between 3.0-3.5 mph. If I am just watching TV or listening to music, I try to stay between 3.8-4.2 for walking. I tried the high protein thing for a while... Like many people who have struggled with their weight, I have tried almost EVERY diet. On the low carb diets I was never good and getting enough fiber which caused me much discomfort and ultimately illness. Gluten free is the ONLY change that has really helped in controlling the pain and inflamation that comes with my Rheumatoid Arthritis though, so that is my MAIN focus going forward... It's nice to feel like my age (27) instead of like an arthritic old crone. Almost worth the sacrifice of bread and cake. Almost....
