Today I had a full day of orientation at my new job. I learned a lot about all of the departments in the social services agency I work in. I was also able to network with other new employees. One of them came up to me and introduced herself as someone I had helped when I was working for a private company two years ago. I was surprised she still remembered me. I was also very proud that after I helped her secure housing, which was no easy feat considering her circumstances at the time, she went on to make a better life for herself and her children. It reminded me why I enjoy my work.
Downside to this is that the orientation was in another part of the city with bad food choices. I tried to stick as closely to the first phase of Atkins, Induction, as I could while eating at a fast food restaurant. I chose a salad and a cheeseburger. Most of the food was wasted since I didn't eat the cheeseburger buns and condiments. The salad threw me for a loop. Aren't salads supposed to be healthy? Even if they weren't aiming for the low carb crowd what was up with all that dressing, iceberg lettuce instead of other leafy greens full of nutrients, breaded chicken instead of just grilled chicken, all that cheese, and a giant mound of tortilla chips (?!), etc. I tried my best to eat only the healthy bits and that didn't leave much of a lunch for me. I'm going to the last part of orientation tomorrow. It'll be another all-day event. So, I am going to pack my own salad tomorrow!
