~Bulky vs. Ballerina~

When I woke up this morning the first thing I noticed was the tightness of the two rings on my left hand. Ah, yes the wonders of water retention. The second thing I noticed was the sound of a steady rain outside and the morning song of a lone Chickadee trying to convince every female birdie in the neighborhood that he be the one to hang with this breeding season. LOL! And, the last thing I noticed is that every joint and muscle in my body felt sore, tender, and achy!

I'm trying to watch my motrin intake. I started having stomach upset from the Ibu profin last week. Now, I try to only take it on those days when I work out. Today is a rest day, so the latest I can take the motrin is tonight before I go to bed so it will be in my system and help with the arthritis and inflammation in time for tomorrows workout.

And, bet your bottom dollar the rain is not helping. As much as retaining water often breaks my heart when weigh in day comes. It's also on these days, I understand why my body does it. I didn't come by my arthritis honestly, LOL. I'm only 43. At 40 years of age, I randomly contracted a strain of strep that was either mis-diagnosed or not discovered quickly enough. As a result it developed into Rheumatic Fever. I incurred a fever of 104 and my immune system became so worn down, it started attacking the tissue in my joints. I was pretty much suffering all the symptoms of someone who has rheumatoid arthritis. I did finally get my bottom to an urgent care where all the blood tests, examinations, specialists and appointments finally came to this final diagnosis. But, by that time a certain amount of damage had already been done, specifically in my right hip.

So, in short on rainy days like this, my 43 year old body feels like your average 60-65 year old that suffers from chronic arthritis. And, water retention is about the only thing cushioning some of these joints! At the same time, I noted that my annual sneezing has commenced. Oh yes, allergy season is upon us again and because of all the rain, the pollen count will likely be high this year.

This is another thing I need to be mindful about. I live in a coniferous environment. Every soul I know that resides here, suffers from allergies. Whether it's benedryl or clariton (which, I have plenty of both), I need to coordinate carefully taking those meds on days I won't be working out. Although it makes me chuckle to imagine trying to lift weights on benedryl. LOL. Not enough to try it out, though. Anyhow, allergies and the meds that treat them will cause water retention, which means my weight loss this spring and summer may look very slow. I know this, because I have indeed been through this before and drinking tons of water folks, will only get ya so far.

On the brighter side, I do notice the muscle gain. In fact, it was hard for me to get to sad about the .6 lb gain in weight because this last weekend was the first time in 3 weeks, I'm able to see with my own eyes, that there is indeed a shape emerging from this blob. My skin is much tighter, and the muscle actually visible in ways I have never seen on this body. And, despite my present achiness, there have been several moments I feel that muscle kicking and giving my joints a break...

I like it.

Back in the day, I used to whine about bulking up. I wanted to be thin and waif like. Such was the eighties. But, things definitely change when ya hit your 40's in a very real way. If bulking up helps lesson the pain on rainy days like this and makes it easier for me to do something as simple as opening a package of mints to fill up the mint bowl at work. I'm okay with bulking up. Besides, I kinda like the muscles I'm starting to see in my neck. And my chest looks like it got a 1 centimeter boob lift, and frankly at this point I'll take whatever lift I can get in that department, LOL!
