Started on a low dose of statin today (rosuvastatin 5 mg). My healthier diet has improved literally everything on my blood test except LDL cholesterol, which has increased 40 points since the beginning of my current weight loss, since May 2023. Ugh. Hoping for good tolerance of this drug.

I permanently stopped statins due to excruciating leg pains. I only realized how bad leg pains had gotten after I stopped taking it due to emergency surgery for sepsis from diverticulitis rupture & 2nd surgery due to 1st area turning gangrene + getting a 2ndary infection. I was taking several antibiotics & didn't want to risk pharma complications so I stopped. I also stopped BP meds. After a few months I realized I actually felt better than I had in yrs! I started looking into side effects of both meds + checking BS & A1C. All went normal after stopping those 2 meds. FYI both had warnings that BS should be monitored while on it. I shockingly had 6.8 A1C at hospital. I did try to reintroduce both meds later but pains immediately came back + BS & A1C rose. I started CoQ10 alone instead with success in getting better cholesterol numbers.I refuse to take statins cuz I've realized it increases my fibro pain to off the chart levels. Of course this is just my experience & everyone should work with their Dr for a personalized plan but I thought I'd share my experience cuz it was only found by personal research & experimentation over several months w/ direct implications. Sorry so long but if ya made it this far best wishes to all & cheers to great health!❤

Icky, thank you so much for sharing your experience here! Wow, you had such a terrible mix of side of effects, not just the muscle dysfunction but also the blood sugar going haywire. So many things can go wrong with these statins. It sounds like you were able to bounce back from these health traumas and are feeling better. Since my doc has been telling to take statins for years, I have been looking into them for a long time. I heard of the diabetes risk and I didn’t want to do it when I was heavier with the HBA1C inching higher with every test. Now I think I’m lower risk for diabetes (my HBA1C is back to 5.2), so that’s why I decided to go for it, but your story reminds me how important it will be to stay vigilant. And Maria’s caution about the liver risks—thanks for letting us know about your experience, too. My doc is getting me retested in 3 months to see how I’m responding to the statin. I’ll insist on frequent checks.

Sorry, I got your name wrong, Marie (not Maria!). It’s too bad you can’t look back at the names when typing up a post on the app.

Shelbstar, I definitely need to pick up more cardio. I walk a lot but my rowing machine hasn’t been used in weeks. I told myself that if I get statin-induced muscle pains that interfere with my walking routines and exercise, I’m keeping the exercise and dropping the statin, STAT (couldn’t resist the pun). I take my fish oil pill almost everyday. It definitely lowers triglycerides but the effect on LDL is actually mixed or neutral, from what I’m reading.
