OK Ladies - I need your help.

As you all know, I have been on the road for 9 weeks. I finally came home and was able to weigh myself - I lost 5 pounds. I also measured myself and did see some inch loss - about half and inch in my waist an inch on my hips, half and inch on my thigh and a quarter of an inch under my breasts. I am thankful for all of these positive negatives :) Very thankful in fact as I can now wear my size 10 jeans. Some of which are still a little tight but wearable.

Anyway I need your help. I have been faithfully sticking to my WOE. At least what I know as my WOE. I keep my net carbs under 20 and have been mainly eating fresh not processed or man made items. I have been recording my food also and although some days may say that it was part of what I ate, it was actually what I ate. My phone does not make that distinction and that is where I have been recording my food for the most part.

I admit that I do not exercise normally. But for about 3 of the weeks i was gone, I was walking 1 mile a day. Not much I know but it was a little bit of exercise.

My plan going forward is to add some exercise to my day but I would prefer to continue losing without it as I am afraid that I will not stick to an exercise plan for the rest of my life. If I don't, I am afraid that the weight will come back no matter how well I eat. I would prefer to get my diet working correctly and get to a size that diet alone will support.

That is why I need help. Do you see anything on my daily intake that is hurting me? I know there are a few times where I have had sugar free cheesecake or sugar free ice cream but honestly, that is not the norm. I have pretty much cut out all soft drinks and splenda. I no longer use the sugar free syrup or splenda in my morning coffee. Whike I do have problems with my body 'going' as it should, recently, it seems to have decided to cooporate a bit. Still not reular but better than being a weekly occurrance if you know what i mean.

Anyway, I would really like your help with this. I will not get my feeling hurt with what you say. My dear friend Paula has said in the past that you sometimes need to start back at the beginning and look at what you have done. This is what i am trying to do. I am not stalled - I now that. But i want to make sure I don't get stalled. I believe I have about 30 to 35 pounds left to loose and I understand that it is slow for even the best of us and I am a slow looser no matter what. I just want to make sure I stay a looser and don't get sidetracked because I am at what is an acceptible size. I think you all understand about that :)

Okay... I'm guessing my comment won't be the only one that says this, but you are not following Atkins, at least not in a healthy long-term way. Your calories are way too low -- your poor body must think it's being starved and you are no where near the required amount of daily veggies. My biggest concern for you would be regarding your health and the second biggest would be whether you could ever permanently sustain this type of an eating pattern. You've asked for help -- my suggestion would be to actually take 2 weeks and follow Induction. At least 12 nc of acceptable veggies each day, limit your cheese intake, watch your artificial sugars, make sure you're getting enough protein and fat, and shoot for 1500 calories a day. I think everyone's desire on this site is to see everyone succeed - for the long term. But, long term success means sustainable, permanent life changes that are good for your mind and your body. I wish you the best of luck. Heidi

I totally agree, while you have lost some weight your body will go into starvation mode and you will stall. Really take some time and get the basics of Atkins down. this link will help http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/faq.php?faq=atkins_faq I would also sugest reading the new atkins book. good luck!

Thanks to you all. Don't take this as an argument but as a request for help. I am on the road over half the time. Getting the veggies in is very difficult for me. When I am home, you are correct and I do try to get the veggies into my diet. But when I am not home, it is difficult. I also often can't eat lunch when I am on the road because of my work schedule. Recently it has been the hospital issues but normally, it is work. Anyway, do you have any suggestions regarding getting the veggies while eating out all the time? I do eat salads with my meals but that is not enough as we all know. Most restaurants are very limited with the veggies you can get and broccoli gets really old really quick. When I have a Ruby Tuesday's near, I try to go there as often as possible due to the veggie choices but they are not always near. Normally, I do not have a refrigerator so taking them and storing them is generally out for me. Again, I am not arguing with you guys but asking for suggestions. This has been one of the difficulties that I have had since I started on this path. I don't eat the Atkins bars and shakes due to the sugar alchohols and cheese is often the only thing that I can have with me so I do get a bite of something good for me rather than the vending machine stuff. I am also aware that the total calories have been low. I did not realize that it would be a big deal given that so many people eat a low calorie diet. The last 9 weeks have been really difficult for me and I admit, I order a meal and then can't eat it. To be honest, the calories I have recorded may be a little high since I generally can't "clean my plate". Also, as far as induction goes - i will go back to that if i have to. But with my travel schedule, it is a very difficult thing to do and I HOPE I can tweak my meals enough to keep from having to do that. Bottom line is that I am home for the next week (I THINK - it depends on the MIL situation) and will strive to increase the veggies and calories as you have suggested. Hopefully that will allow me to see a loss. As I said, suggestions regarding my travel weeks are very welcome.

Liz - what you've done, is set yourself up! No matter how 'healthy' or 'natural' the foods you think you are eating... you really need to go back thru your food logs, one day at a time, and evaluate the two weeks worth or so that shows up on the screen. Let's start w/ your calories. They are ridiculously low. Under 20g's or not... you just simply are not following any program or plan ... you're just winging it! Let's be honest here. It's only by God's grace that you lost anything in the last 5 weeks. First things first... if you really want to do something that is sustainable for a long term lifestyle ... than you need to decide what that is. Be it Atkins, Counting Calories, or Whatever... but no one here can pick for you... and you have 'suggested' you preferred Atkins or Low Carb ... and that's great if you stick w/ that. But bottom line, no matter what you choose... you have to learn how to EAT healthy. Not avoid food. Your food logs look like you are playing hide and seek w/ your nutrition. Coffee, Nuts, and ice cream do not a diet make! (sorry to be so blunt!) Much Love.

No Paula - I wanted you to be blunt. I am a low carb person. It is the best WOE for me. I am not trying to count calories. I just meant that I did not realize it would really matter how many or how few I had as long as my carbs were low. I also did not realize that it was only the last couple of weeks that would show up. I know how bad they are. But I thought it was better for me to not eat than to eat the wrong things and there is just nothing available from the hospital vending maching that I could have and there was no cafeteria to go to. That is hopefully in the past. I do still have the problem with the veggies on the road. Any suggestions on how to solve that? Also, I invite you to check up on me whenever you get the chance. I want this to be a WOE for life not for the time being. That is really important for me. Trying to change myself not just the food I eat and the food that i eat is representative of my internal as well as external changes.

No access to a fridge can be handled with a cooler and ice blocks that last for up to 8 hours. Bring some carrots and cuke sliced up. Heck you really don't even need to refridgerate either carrots or cucumbers. They won't go bad sitting our for several hours, why would they? While lettuce wilts, there are other veggies that make good snacks, raw cauliflower, green peppers, cherry tomotoes, celery, green beans all of which can be chilled or not. All of which can be eaten raw. While you say "on the road" I don't know what you mean, however their should be a grocery store in every town. Just pop in and buy some veggies to nibble on. Most stores even have premade veggie platters for parties, some small ones. Nuts instead of cheese also make a nice snack. When there is no veggies available (say a 7-11) I'll opt for the healthiest thing I can find, which is usually a fruit cup. Sure some of the fruit is higher in carbs, but I'd rather eat that then something completely unhealthy.

I wonder if you were to do Atkins but aproch it Veagan. I'm not saying only eat vegies I am saying soy and beans would be attatives that you could do in your curent diet. I was thinking that you could have a cooler with fresh vegies for snacks as well. I'm sure there are groceries on the road. As far as no time to eat lunch??? I know you must stop somewhere to use the facilities? Also that reminds me unless you eat more fiber you will never be regular and that means you are carring around those toxins in your bowel. sometimes upto 5 lbs. this is really unhealthy and will literaly make you feel like s*@t! no pun intended. I will think on this some more and try come up with some more solutions. I dont think I would go back to Induction at this point but I do think you carb intake is at that and less. So after induction your suppose to add by 5 net carb increments diferent types of carbs, includeing fruits, nuts, yogurt, soft cheese, and legumes. I think these things are what is going to get you to where you should be, not starving yourself. I'll be back if I have more or pm me

Hey Liz - back again! Ok, let's start from a different point of view for a minute. Who books your trips? You or someone else? Do you always fly? And if so do you have a rental car available to you at your destinations? (9 weeks away from home is a long time)..is this a normal expected time away? How long is normal? When you are back home, how long do you have before you typically have to leave again? All those questions have some reasons behind why I am asking... When you are home - let's say a week or two before you have to head out again - I know you must be able to have some advanced warning to your schedule. They don't just call you in the middle of the night and ask you to get on a plane in two hours. So, you likely have to do laundry, send some items to the cleaners, catch up on life at home, pre-purchase make up, toiletries, nylons, etc... So you do have some opportunity to plan ahead. And we are going to come up with ideas to capitalize on THAT! If flying - and someone else is booking your hotel, you need to let them know that you REQUIRE a room w/ a mini-fridge. Doesn't have to be a budget buster - hotels of all price ranges have these mini fridges available in them. Now whether you have a car available to you... or you have to ask the hotel for a shuttle, or even hire a cab ... you must make time upon arrival to get to a local grocery of some kind. IF THIS OCCASIONALLY becomes an issue - than the next best solution would be to travel w/ a mini soft cooler as a travel bag. Tell the airlines that you are on a SPECIAL diet for your health... I believe you can check their websites, but food can be taken onboard for this reason!!! If you are traveling in your own car... this goes without saying. This should be packed prior to every trip. Either way... you should end up at your destination w/ a pre-packed cooler (and every hotel has an ice machine) - or - a mini fridge. You will need to learn to hold yourself accountable to making this happen for you... because as your journals reflect - the food is often not available in work/hospital/outside settings. Eating out does take it's toll - but I have managed (whether in a hospital or not) to find SOMETHING that works for my way of eating - whether I liked it or not. Often I have to remind myself what is BEST for me - is to eat the plain salad w/ a hamburger cut up on top - than to eat nothing at all. I might not even want that... but if it's all I have to choose from... then that's it. Tomorrow is another day, and hopefully I will have more flavorful options to choose from, but stay in the moment and find the BEST available option to you. You just cannot live on nuts alone. As a matter of fact - lose the nuts for now. They are not an Induction food... and you need to start fresh. Use a protein shake in the morning if you have to (but only if absolutely no food is available to you while traveling.) Otherwise, have eggs. They're in every restaurant in America. Lunch - if you can get out to get something... salads w/ grilled chicken or steak (also on most menu's) - or grab items pre packed in that cooler and make sure you have them with you. Dinners - shouldn't be too hard. You NEED to learn to speak up for yourself. Ask lots of questions at the restaurant you're in. Tell them you really need to be careful of SUGARS ... so could you just have the chicken grilled or the steak w/out any pre-marinade??? Do they put any fillers in their cheeseburgers (like bread crumbs to keep them moist?)? Then select what you can. Please take some time to review the basics. Either in a book if you have one, or atkins.com, or one of the other low carb websites. Ok, ... enough for now... can you live with ANY of these suggestions???? Much Love.

Thanks guys. I like your thought about cucumbers. I generally fly everywhere so a cooler is likely out. And sadly, I also normally don't go to the facilities during the day. I sit there in front of my computer and work from about 8 AM to about 6PM. then we go to dinner and I get to my hotel room around 7:30 or 8 PM and go strait to bed. This is a schedule that I am trying to change but it is often necessary. The cucumber would be a great snak I think. As you said, it should not need refrigeration. I have added strawberries to my WOE because they are healthy i think, lower in carbs and increase my carb intake. plus they are often really tasty and something that I don't have to refrigerate. I also eat nuts. Macadamia nuts normally. They were suggestions in the first atkins book as was cream cheese. I often eat a couple of pots of cream cheese for breakfast and then an oz of macadamia nuts for lunch or a snak. Since I drink a morning coffee with heavy whipping cream I have been hoping that the cream jump started my body a bit.

that is the Fat Fast portion of the "old" Atkins diet. it was ment to do for ONE week as it is unhealthy to do it longer.

Also.........now this is going to sound bad, but here it is. You did not get to your weight by not eatting am i correct? You oviously had access to food at some point. You are going to have to step up and take the bull by the horns and find a way to eat better. Good luck!

hmmm where to start?... I am an auditor and fraud examiner for a large company. I travel at least 50% of the time. often it is one week out and one week home but this time of year, it is generally 2 weeks out and one week home. I have been gone so long because I was in Texas and had bull riding events to help with. It was a special situation Then with the MIL's stroke, I had to stay for another week and a half. you are correct, some hotels do have the refrigerators and I can do better in those cases. I will start going to a grocery store when I get some place and get some veggie snaks. As I mentioned, the cucumbers sound like a good idea. I am not crazy about carrots but maybe that would help me increase my carb intake. I do like tomatoes and that could be a solution as well. The problem with hotels is that I don't travel alone and my hotel can't be more than my staff's rooms. Therefore, it is by luck that I get the refrigerator. The soft sided cooler is a good idea and I will see about getting one. Even if I don't, I may be able to get veggies after work for the next day and store them in ice. I have been trying to be a good Atkin's-er at restaurants. I have been asking plenty of questions at restaurants and staying away from the sugars and marinades. I guess I have not been as 'good' as I thought but I can say that I have not been cheating or careless. I have been very careful with the carbs - too careful maybe. But careful. I generally don't eat cheeseburgers because I really don't like hamburger meat. I tend to eat steak or fish most meals. Steak mainly because I don't like fish and only eat it because it is good for me. I need to go back to having more chicken but it is so often dry that I don't eat it when I order it. I honestly am not a fan of eggs but I have noticed that some restaurants have boiled eggs now and I can make an egg salad or something with them maybe. I have to purchase my food while on the road in order to be paid for it but i can purchse pickles and mayo every week if needed. Anyway, Paula, if you don't mind, I am going to check out your food journal and see if I can mimick it a bit. I know that you have been back on induction and that might help me get some ideas. As I have said in other journals, I have gotten to where I don't really want to eat at all so it is easy to try to make a change. I am not a 'foodie' for sure :) I will go back to an induction type plan for the rest of this week and next. it will not be 2 weeks total but it will be a good start. I will start tomorrow for sure but try to do better the rest of today also. I had a chicken breast for lunch and will eat a tomato in a bit to give me some carbs. Thanks. I really appreciate all the help.

You are correct about the eating part. I did eat - just did not eat the correct things. I have no problem getting the carbs in - it is getting the right carbs in that is the kicker :) Now, because I have cut out the carbs, I am never hungry. it is a chore to eat. it is much easier to not eat than to figure out what I want to eat or to eat things i do not want. That is the truth of the matter I guess. I have not made it a priority to eat the right things because I don't want anything at all. It has gotten to where i hate food. not a good thing I know and that is why I am trying to fix this problem. And yes, I know it was the fat fast. i don't just eat the nuts and cream cheese as he directed for the fat fast. I just eat them as snaks when I can't get anything else. I agree with you that doing only that for long would be really bad :). For me, this journey is not just about weight loss. I am going to have plenty of stumbles along the way. I know that I need to make myself a priority and giving in to the lack of hunger does not equate to making myself a priority. I have to do what is right for me not what is easy. I will learn how to do that. I am thinking i may just be a slow learner :)

Now THAT'S what I wanna hear!!!!!!!!!!!! The reason you are not hungry is that you body is feeding on it self.........all the parts not just the fat. that mean you muscle. Your heart is a muscle.

not mine... my heart is a plaque filled flabby organism that is prone to getting crushed... :) LOL Just teasing....
