How ironic - I was thinking about the protein powder I use for my shakes last night wondering about it being 'processed' and even more wondering 'what exactly is it? Good article and idea on making something a little more 'whole' as I can see adding almonds to that. Not sure about the 'sugar' needed (as listed) because .. well.. why? Esp as I use fresh fruit. Thank you for sharing this article.

Some protein powders have fillers and artificial sweeteners. It's expensive, especially since I've upped my intake. Once I run out of Slim-Fast, I'm thinking about substituting the home brew protein powder on intermittent fasting days.

I have put down many a container of protein powder because sweeteners and fake sweeteners added to them. I prefer to use fresh fruit too. Since weaning myself from fake sweetners, I don't want to go back. Thank you for sharing.

Very interesting article on making protein powder at home. Thank you!

Interesting, worth a try. I'm thinking all soybeans with the oats and rice instead of adding the black bens since soy is a complete protein.

I bought a Black & Decker coffee grinder for $16.88 at Kroger a year-and-a-day ago at Kroger. I thought it would be useful for also grinding spices, nuts, and cheese. I ground some coffee beans and put it away. Now that I've found something else useful to do with it, I can't remember where I put it!

Chris I use my coffee grinder constantly for flax seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame, nuts, spices, and actually every now and then even for coffee. It's always on my counter because it is used several times a week. Am going to try making some today, it would be a good protein boost for my morning smoothie, especially adding in the complementary proteins.

i'm too lazy to make my own protein powder. luckily isopure makes very good ones. i hear you, though, they are pricey. just have to catch a sale on puritan's pride or various other sites. let us know how it turns out CC.

br_e_co, I like the fact that Isopure doesn't have artificial sweeteners. Too rich for my blood though, at least on Amazon. I can get four pounds of Jarrow natural for the cost of three pounds of Isopure.

I found the instructions for the Black & Decker coffee grinder. They don't recommend grinding rice in it so that takes away the urgency for finding it. I guess I will find it when I run across it. My next step is to try the Ninja Prep Pro.

Soy beans take quite a bit of grinding compared to the other ingredients. Took me less than 10 minutes and I have protein powder for the week plus. 1/4 cup of whole soybeans, 1/4 cup of arramanth, 1/3 cup of oatmeal. It made 1.5 cups. Probably cost less than fifty cents.

I am using Almased protein powder with almond milk shakes. Kind of expensive...might try making my own...?

Chris my Cuisinart coffee grinder worked beautifully. I don't think the black and Decker ones are as tough. I picked one up at a thrift shop for $1.00, new in the box or maybe used once or twice. It didn't like grinding the coffee beans and has a seal issue after just a few uses on mostly seeds.

In hindsight, I wish I had spent a few dollars more and gotten a Krups. It produces a fine grind and can handle grains. To be fair, I was mainly concerned back then about grinding coffee and the Black & Decker did fine, although you can't expect Cuisinart build quality for $16.88.

Exactly Chris, I inherited mine, it's been around a long time. Bought the black and Decker, since it was a buck, for an extra. Krups usually makes a really good product.

If you have a blender, you could try unscrewing the large pitcher & screwing on a mason jar instead (for smaller volumes). The jars come in lots of sizes and are inexpensive. Google it for ideas.

Thanks for the link to making protein powder, I'll have to check it out. I've got a Black & Decker coffee grinder limping along with only one blade so no way it could handle it but maybe my Ninja blender would.

jmb3450, I was able to grind rice, beans, and oats with the Ninja Prep Pro. Not all of it reached powder stage, probably because I was too cautious about pulsing it for more than a few seconds.
