Most diets can be boiled down to three words: eat more vegetables

With all the controversy about the "best" or "right" way to diet for better health or to lose weight, it isn't easy choosing a diet. No worries. They all are variations of the "eat more vegetables" diet.

That's what Charlie Knoles points out on Mind Body Green:

There is so much controversy about the right diet for optimum health and fitness and it seems like the rules are constantly changing. So I've broken each diet down for you to make it easy:

Low carb: Don't eat sugar or bread and eat more vegetables.

Paleo: Eat tons of meat, don't eat grains and eat more vegetables.

Calorie counting: Don't eat too much crap and eat more vegetables.

Mediterranean: Eat more vegetables, olive oil and occasionally fish

Macrobiotic: Eat more vegetables and grains, avoiding animal products and processed foods.

Ayurveda: Eat more vegetables in accordance to your Dosha.

Vegan: Eat more vegetables and then even more vegetables.

I happen to know really healthy and fit people who follow ALL of these diets, based on what works best for them. The truth is that they are all variants of the "eat more vegetables" diet, which in my opinion, is the only diet that has ever been proven to really work.

Thanks for the break down. It's nice that in this day and age, we all have a choice to chose.

Yes, I see the similarity! Vegetables are great :) Can't wait to hit the farmer's market tomorrow morning to see what they've got, it's the best part! (Well, besides the eggs and scones...those are good too.)

Yep. I think it's just that same old 'all things in moderation, even the moderation' saying combined with 'eat food, real food, good food, just not too much food' and tossing in a 'stay away from as much of the processed food as possible'.

I want to add .. the thing that affects it all, really, is quantity. While a mac&cheese calorie doesn't affect the body energy the same as a broccoli calorie.. it's the over abundance we become so accustomed to with the super sizing and restaurants that IMHO has contributed to our weight issue more than the actual specific food.

FullaBella, "The Alternate-Day Diet" makes the same point: the widespread availability of cheap, tasty food has been our downfall.

Good post. Sometimes we can lose sight of the "eat more vegetables" when we have so many options.

You may just have something there! Mama always told us to eat our veggies.

I often ponder how different our world would be if people just ate their vegetables. *sigh*

A favorite story..My granddaughter, Kinzie, loves spinach. When she was 3 she asked me if she could just have spinach for lunch. Good fresh spinach is often hard to find here so I used to always keep frozen spinach (boxes then). I said sure. She ate one entire box asked for more. Cooked another box. She ate about half of that. She stopped eating and said. "Gramma, this is too much of a good thing! Can I save some for later?".

Chris, availability of cheap and fast food, including boxes of fake mac and cheese or the microwave containers that one sickly person at work has for lunch every day are a huge contributing factor. Also lots of are on the go, we want something to eat while we drive. That means something we can hold and eat. That often means a sandwich or Mexican from fast food place. I fall into that trap occasionally myself. Unfortunately many people make it a habit.

FYI real homemade mac and cheese with natural cheese and good whole grain or quinoa noodles are really good occasionally.
