I'm back home after spending the better part of a week in Atlanta. I got right back into the swing of things with a 3.3-mile walk this AM, 2.6 of it with one dog and .8 with both. One of my poochies aggravated her leg or shoulder, so she's walking with a slight limp. She seems in high spirits now that she's out of the kennel and willing to go the entire way with my other dog, but I cut her walk short just to be on the safe side.
Today - the last Monday in March - marks 1 year since I began Atkins. Date-wise, the one-year mark will be tomorrow. Either way, I'm 63 pounds lighter in 52 weeks, which is much better than I ever thought I would do.
I began Atkins by default. Strange, but true. One year ago, DH and I were in Atlanta (almost an annual trip) when he began talking about how he had to "do something" when we got home to drop a few pounds before his fitness test a few months later. I CASUALLY remarked that I had begun to THINK about doing something myself, PROBABLY Atkins, and so MAYBE I'd do something when he started.
All of a sudden, we were back home (one year ago) and DH was planning out Atkins-friendly meals and setting up a grocery list for Atkins-type foods, etc. Seemingly before I knew it, we were on Atkins. I felt anything but ready.
Now if I had heard of any story like this, I'd be very skeptical that the person would last very long on ANY kind of a diet. I think everyone knows that you need motivation for this, you need commitment, you need focus. Initially, I had little to none of any of it.
But, given a couple days and those first few pounds coming off, well, Atkins began to be a habit. I love meat and I've never really bought into "low fat" so Atkins is a really nice fit for me.
When I began, I was 235 pounds, the heaviest I had ever been in my life. It was hard to imagine being anywhere near "normal" weight again. I didn't know if my body would even have the ability to get there again; I hadn't been a normal adult weight for at least 20-25 years!
Of course, I planned out what I would weigh on various dates, but I just couldn't face planning out the entire journey. Instead of being motivating, it would be depressing for me. So, I just planned out when I might get to 200 pounds, a 35-pound loss! Thirty-five pounds seemed like a HUGE amount of weight to lose, yet, I'd still be 200 pounds! When it became apparent that my body would not cooperate with that initial schedule, I had to reevaluate and adjust. Instead of weighing 200 pounds by July 4, I made that 200-pound goal ahead of an adjusted schedule date of Labor Day.
And that's how it has gone, setting up goals for just a few months ahead and then seeing how my body does. April is just around the corner and with that comes the time to set up goals for the summer. I'm waiting until I hit 170, which is my goal for 4/15, if not before.
