Hello FS family,
I'm asking for your honest opinions. How could I have plateaued after losing only 5 pounds so far? Seems like it is too early in my weight loss journey for that to be happening. I still have 40 pounds to lose.

I've been below my RDI every day except 2 days since I started tracking in mid June. I have recorded every bite of food I have eaten religiously and estimated high if I was out and did not have access to a scale.

Do I need to reduce my calories even more? I am 5" 10" female. I also exercise 5-6 days a week. Maybe I need to try low carb?

I try not to eat meat on week days, which results in higher carbs because I am eating chick peas and hummus for protein. Maybe I need to get away from that practice to see if it makes a difference.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm starting to panic!

Could your calories be too high? I’ve found FS recommendation to be too much for me to lose.

FS is recommending 2000 - whiich I know is way too high. My average has been about 1500/day

Remember, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.... stay consistent, and your results will follow.

Yes, I did that last night. Of course I have nothing to compare it to right now. SO I guess I need to wait it out.

Play around with numbers, which takes time and patience. I agree with DP, have a second way of checking your progress. Also if you have a scale that reads your fat % and it's going down, that's progress. And make sure you're drinking water and getting sleep. Those last 2 makes a difference, with me anyway.

Are you drinking enough water? I don’t lose if I am dehydrated no matter my eating or exercise.

I think this is fairly typical. It is for me. I only lose 5lbs a month. The first 2 weeks I don't lose much, then the last 2 weeks it starts dropping a little every day. I've tried different things on my journey like increasing the intensity of my workouts, to staggering my calories so that I don't eat the same amount every day. But none of that seems to speed it up or make me lose more. I've lost 60lbs now but it's taken me a year. I think having patience and faith that it will come off if you keep burning more cals than consumed is the key. Don't give up because you feel it's not working.

To be honest, I probably can be better about drinking more water while I am at work. I'll have to work on that.

I choose 1500 RDI based on my goal weight being 150lb. I ran an average of all days logged and my RDI averaged 1485. I have access to a Peleton bike at work, so i typically ride 30-45 minutes M-F. Then I'll add their strength training and stretching classes after the ride. On Sat I usually do an eliptical for 30 minutes. No access to weights on Sat, so I do body weight strength training. Sunday is a rest day.

The first few pounds are usually only water weight. But don’t let that discourage you. Usually if you’re working out and have a calorie deficit of 500 cal a day 3500 a week you will lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. It’s a slow process but you will start seeing the results after a while. You just need to stick with it. I would do intermittent fasting and eat around noon or 1 PM every day. That saved a bunch of calories throughout the day. Try low carb but not too much. Usually earlier in the day and then eat meat and veggies at night.

Just started recently and found out from the comments that many of us have the same experience. I can tell you for sure that drastically reducing food intake did not work as far as weight is concerned. Thankfully, all these success stories on this site make me think success, however you define it, it's possible. It is a transformation that takes perseverance. I won't give up if you don't.

I concur w/Mr. Tim Vail: "Don't Panic!!!" 1st of all, water-loss comes off quickly, at first, then, when you get into losing fat, it takes a while bc you didn't gain it over-night either. We always tend to lose first, where we gained it last. Also, working-out, as much as you are, tends to build muscle. So, you are turning your fat into muscle and muscle "always" weighs more than fat. In addition, you are shrinking and that means you will be losing inches which is much more pleasing, IMHO, to the eye and the loose-fit of clothing, than the lbs on any scale. Begin measuring....especially the areas where you want to lose fat from. The main accomplishment you want to walk-away with is getting: toned, firm, & tightened. Those are the toughest achievements to attain for females and should be the main goals no matter how much we weigh. Good journey to you and I have never been patient, but when it comes to losing weight....I'm forced to be. Sad, but true....for me, at least. Good journey & may God bless us all. EOS =)

just keep going! it has taken me 4.5 months to loose 10lbs! there is no way, you can't lose, by being in a calorie deficit?

I meant that as an exclamation point not a question mark!!

Agree do not panic!! Fat does not go away over night or even in a week. It can be a slow process which is better because that is real fat you are getting rid of and gaining muscle.

Another thought occurred to me. You might not be consuming enough calories. I started out around the same weight as you. The first month and a half I ate 1800 cals. If you don't eat enough your metabolism can slow down. Currently I eat 1500 cals and I weigh 134lbs. If I eat less than that I feel very sluggish. I know it's scary to try eating more. When I did the calorie estimation in FS I set to sedentary at first. Later as I became more active I set it to low active. Thats where I'm at now and thats worked for me. When I get to maintenance later this month I should be able to eat 1800 cals again. Someone suggested to me to slowly increase by 100 to see how my body handles it. Anyway, all food for thought. Everyone is different so it takes a little adjustment here and there to dial it in. Whatever you do ots probably best for it to be something you can live with long term for success.

Sit tight, I wouldn’t go low carb if you don’t eat meat it would be quite restrictive. I’m sure lots of people manage it but I’d get in a pickle with variety I think. Keep your good carbs and perhaps review your numbers? The more I read the more I think it’s a maths problem, numbers in versus numbers out and accurate weighing. Hope I don’t sound like I’m telling you what to do !!
