Happy Hump Day!

Have decided that I need to be adding some new veggies to my menu (for the sake of nutrition and to break the monotony). Went shopping last night and picked up fresh asparagus, ginger, and bean sprouts. Haven't decided what I'm going to make yet but one thing for sure, tonight's dinner will be healthy!

Sounds like oriental food tonight. Oh yum, I only have 6 oz of pork loin left. I should fix it with broccoli tonite. Wish I had some sprouts to put in it. Thanks for the dinner idea.

Sounds like a yummy plan. Had asparagus recently, tasted really good, my patch in my yard is of course not growing yet.

Ruth - mine too. I have some in my garden but it doesn't too very well. Can't say I have a green thumb.

Rocky - sprouts from different plants taste different. For instance, radish sprouts are zesty, where as bean sprouts don't have much flavor. Why don't you try some different varieties?

wholefood - got any tips for growing it? I get about one meal a year, and then a few pieces to throw into a stir fry or omelet.

It takes several years to get started, I planted some 5 springs ago and added some the next year. I don't have good dirt so last year was the first year that I had a good harvest, for a couple years I'd get a one person meal a few times. Plant it where it can spread and you don't have to mess with it much. It's a heavy feeder so add bags of mushroom compost on it every spring. After a couple years you can start harvesting it. Once you get just really skinny tasteless stalks let it grow. Looks pretty with the feathery fronds the weed eat it to the ground once it turns brown in the fall. Mulch it always the roots are shallow and dry out pretty fast. I have a patch about 8 feet by 4 feet. No expert but it is working for me. Once it is established it's pretty hardy. The first time I had asparagus that wasn't canned, gross and slimy, is when I figured out we had a neglected patch in our backyard in the 4th state I lived in in high school. My parents had no idea what it was. That was in 1967 one of the moments that set me on a path of learning how to really cook. Found some directions in an old cookbook my aunt had (I actually have that cookbook) and found out that fresh asparagus is amazing!! Last year I ate fresh asparagus every day till it became too hot and the stalks became pretty woody and tasteless.

Sounds wise. I ate a ton of cruciferous salad the first couple weeks of my diet and got burned out. Then I ate broccolli and green beans, got sick of those too. Moved on to spinach. Now I'm sick of that too, lol. Last night I followed your suggestion (to not miss potatoes too much) and put cheese on steamed cauliflower - YUMMM! Thanks for the suggestion!

Buffy, that's just what is working for me in my Missouri clay in a yard that has really poor soil. Am going to try a couple of raised beds this year as I have trouble with most veggies.

There are so many vegetables that are available. Don't just stick with the ones at your super market, they aim for maximizing sales and limit variety. Try those at ethnic markets, farmers markets in the summer, plant some ones you have never tried that you order from a seed catalogue. You will find varieties that will take you on a new food journey.

I've tried to find a number of kinds of vegetables available, the smallest estimate I have found deals with commercially available seeds in Britain is over 1200.
