Another gorgeous day, but the rain is a'comin'! I need a quick run to the store but that's all I plan on doing outside today. The walk with the doggies this AM was nice with a light cloud cover, but warm temps in the mid-70's.
I've been fighting to find some motivation....REAL motivation....for a few months now. I find a little something that lasts a few days, but fades after that. I want to be sure my clothes still fit me, but just can't quite muster up the real focus to drop the numbers on the scale - and "wishing" them to drop doesn't work!
Yesterday, as I was checking on the bio of Dr. Eric Westman so I could post about his and Jimmy Moore's new book coming out in late August ("Cholesterol Clarity: What the HDL is Wrong with My Numbers"), I happened on a couple YouTube videos of him, so I watched one.
I suspect what I was watching was a first introduction of some patients to him and the WOE he wanted them to follow. Although the YouTube title mentioned Atkins, I don't think he ever mentioned Atkins in the video...what he was really describing was a slightly different version of Atkins....kind of a strict Induction but based on 20 TOTAL carbs....maybe like an older Atkins plan???? I don't know.
But it was great watching him sit there and talk about the plan. His focus is on whole, fresh foods, although the WOE allows processed meats, as long as the carbs are low. And while he does make some allowances for things like Carbmaster yogurt, he pretty much tries to gently steer people away from all the low-carb candies, desserts, and the like with sugar alcohols. Of course, if one is looking at TOTAL carbs, that's pretty much a given that you can't eat any of the shakes, bars, candies, etc.
All in all, this video that I watched was very much in line with another one of his I watched, maybe a year ago or so. I remember thinking that his view of low-carb is slightly different from the one put forth in "A New Atkins for a New You," of which he's a co-author. In that previous video, he explains that he likes to see his patients stay at a lower level of carbs (20) for as long as possible to drop weight. At some point, I would suppose there has to be a transition, but perhaps not by increasing carbs. I do know from the Volek & Phinney books (also Atkins co-authors), that in Maintenance, one increases FAT, not carbs, and not protein.
All this is providing me with lots to think about. My current working theory is that I've allowed myself too much latitude in portions, calories, and higher-level carbs (like those darn peanuts and peanut butter)....and it's all been just enough to level me out, instead of allowing me to drop. A smidge here, a dollop there, and it may just all add up to be my problem.
So maybe what I need is a shot of motivation from Westman videos, Jimmy Moore blogs, etc. on a regular basis. We'll see.
And, for now, I'm eating up my somewhat-higher-level foods, like melon, and giving some very serious thought to going on the Westman version of low-carb.
