My doctor was thrilled with my weight loss thus far. He asked me how I was doing with the diet and if there were any changes. I told him that I still have the back pain, but there was some improvement. Lower leg swelling is almost gone and breathing is better. I'm not where I would like to be yet, but I'm encouraged with the improvements and so was my doctor. He has been my doctor for quite a few years and I used to work with him when he was a resident. He is the first person that mentioned to me about the weight loss surgery because he's seen me struggle to lose weight and even tried me on diet pills for a few months (I hated taking those because they make you feel weird).

He's told me that he has quite a few patients that have gone through the weight loss surgery and have done well. I asked him about how long it may be before I could come off some of my medication after the surgery. He said that the blood pressure medication is usually the first med that can be weaned off and that usually starts a couple of months after surgery. He and I both hope that I can come off all my medication except for the vitamins I will have to take. He told me that most of his patients that have had the surgery are very surprised at how great they feel afterwards and many of their health issues go away or are very much improved.

I told him my goal of losing a total of 55# by the end of January and he said that was a realistic goal and would be pleased with that also. He told me that the more weight I can lose prior to surgery, the safer the surgery will be for me. I questioned him about my decision to have the surgery versus not having the surgery and what the success rate is. He and the surgeon have seen more lasting results with the surgery. People are able to lose massive weight (like me), but the success rate in keeping it off is rather low. The surgery helps you to keep it off long term. It's still a lot of work according to the people in the support group and if you don't work at it, you can gain back some of the weight you lose. The surgery just makes it easier to "say no". I hope I can be successful. I'm trying to learn all the habits I need to have right now, so it's not hard at a later time--not that it will ever be easy to say "no". Everyone on this site knows how hard it is to diet. I think it is the toughest thing I've ever had to do. I think that is why it will be so sweeeeeet when I am successful at losing the weight. I just can't wait to feel better. It's strange. When I was young, I always tried to lose weight in order to look better and be attractive to men. Now, I want to lose weight to have a normal life in which I feel good and don't have to live in pain--looking better is an added bonus, but not my main focus anymore. Amazing how priorities change as you get older, huh?

My mother and sister-in-law have been very supportive with my decision to look into the surgery and do anything they can to help me with ideas or a sounding board. I'm very glad to have the great support in my family and in my buddies on this site. Hugs to everyone!

I also have a lot of weight to lose, 200lbs. I know the struggles in weight loss, I'm only 24, but I'm doing it for my health. I want to live a longer life, and be able to enjoy the time I have on earth. I'm not having a surgery, but that's just something I would not want to do. Everyone is different, and I know you will lose your weight and be able to control it in the future no matter what route you take! Good luck!

Wow you are doing amazingly well and this journal is a great inspiration and puts my weight loss goals into context. Good luck with your surgery when your time comes, you never know you may not want or need it by then. I hope you feel even better soon with your health x

You are doing great and I'm glad you have a good doctor to help you through this. I've managed to lose a lot of weight in my lifetime but never managed to keep it off. That is going to be the next challenge, I'm hoping that the two years of so it take to lose the weight will give me the time to have new and better habits in place. Before my attitude always was lose it a quickly as possible so I can return to my bad eating habits. At my age I'm going to be wrinkly and saggy but don't care, like you I just want to be healthy. A couple of weeks ago I had to fly across the country and it felt so good to be able to fit into an airplane seat and do up the seatbelt.
