Going the wrong way the whole week, had too much "crap". Even last 3 gym days I had too many dirty carbs and just felt like compete dog 💩 in the gym. That's not usually the case. Cutting the crap back to a minimum and adding more sweet potatoes and/or rice to get extra carbs. Yeah the dirty 💩 is delicious but I don't respond to them well as I already knew but wanted to try again. Sooo this confirms again i can't eat anything i want, be in a deficit and still lose weight. I need to balance my macros to fit my individual needs. Maybe I can eat higher carbs with rice or other sources.

Also going to start tracking sodium and potassium to see what effects my weight, and if I can find a good ratio. Going to up the healthy fruit and spinach.. Hopefully it goes good.

good explanation Chris, I was going to write something similar, some people eat foods and have a reaction to it as it inflames their systems and they gain or note lack of performance. these food sensitivities definitely effect the body. I know this is how it works with me. When I remove these items that react negatively to my system I have no problem eating what I would like as long as I stay in my macro's. I personally don't seem to have a problem with sugar but I do have a problem with the foods it is commonly mixed with like flour or dairy. so this may be why some people do well with eating these things and preforming well and someone else notices a reduction of function and general well being.

Interesting. Hope you can find where the adjustment needs to be made. Real food, and not all of it, usually works for this old body of mine, so I get the preference for sweet potatoes. 😊

Chrisw77 I read the article. It refers to liver glycogen synthesis to replace stores POST exercise. It was not about fructose and galactose as energy sources during exercise. By the way, lactose breaks down to glucose and galactose. Galactose is unstable so is rapidly converted to glucose via the Leloir metabolic pathway. Glycogen is a multibranched polysaccharide of glucose.

I already guinea pigged nothing but junk for over 10 months. I felt amazing and was in the best shape of my life at the time both appearance and cardio-wise. My results were great, maybe I am a mutant like Chris said. :P

Well there you go everyone, per Diablo and the almighty Gail (the pharmacist who knows everything?) eat whatever you want, all the time. You shouldn't feel worse eating candy bars than something healthy of the same macros 🙄

No diablo u are not alone, there has been days where I eat sweet Mexican bread (store bought) foR breakfast, McDonald’s burgers and fries for lunch and cereal for dinner n i feel the same as i would eating other foods. I do notice i have to eat less food cause these are high calorie foods but any other reaction to these foods are non existent to me. And of course as long as I control my calories, i don’t gain weight 😏🙌🏼

But again I don’t consider bread, burgers or cereal junk

So I have never gone from my way of eating to junk food woe

the nice thing CB is you know your body and what works best so comments from the gallery really is going to change nothing. Just showing their lack of understanding or support to how people are different and have different requirements to feel their best.

Maybe age is a factor in the differences you are describing? I am no longer able to eat how I did when I was younger and feel alright. So, if I am feeling crappy from eating crappy and I exercise, my performance suffers because I am feeling crappy. Additionally, I am less likely to exercise at all because I am feeling crappy. Feeling crappy includes but is not limited to heartburn, indigestion, intestinal discomfort, and sluggishness.

I can see both sides. I can eat whatever I want as long as I’m in a deficit and be fine. Yet if I have several days of eating out, fried foods and processed foods then I do feel crappy. Some days my workouts suck but I can’t find a link to food. It’s more stress, lack of sleep and being in a funk for me. Mental and emotional issues cause me more problems than physical issues or foods. One family member is diabetic and quite heavy. I’ve been thinking she could benefit from a Keto type diet. Yesterday I saw her eat half of a quesadilla! She says she’s cut back a lot and it showed in her meal choice and amount eaten. Yet she is still very heavy?!? She is also in her 70’s whereas I am almost 38. We are both cancer survivors (different cancers) and eat similarly. We are just different and that’s okay. CB, read this information and implement what you think may work for you. I’m 100% sure Chris is only trying to help and inform. Everyone else as well. I don’t think anyone is trying to completely change you just have you consider these things and use or dismiss as needed 😉. Only YOU can know YOUR body but I believe in experimentation as time passes to see if things change and if we can find something better for ourselves. And btw, I would do quite well on a snickers diet but if I tried to do a donut diet I would feel sluggish. Will I look into the reasons why? Nope! I like donuts occasionally and don’t want to ruin the treat haha.

It's all good. It just seems crazy that people think we are basically robots and different foods etc can't cause different effects on energy levels And I meant mostly on workout days.. I haven't really noticed lack of energy etc on non gym days from food choices. The only difference on those gym days was the less "healthy" food choices. I appreciate the insight and will go back to what was working for me.

I have been able to eat just about anything post gym without ill effects though. Large amounts of cereal 😋 I'll prob keep that going

The trick for me is making sure it isn't a huge meal and also that the last bite is at least an hour before my workout. Large meals make me sleepy and sluggish. I have those before bed instead. Works like a charm.

I stop 2-3 hours before, I don't like to feel full when I'm at the gym. Never big meals either or I prob wouldn't even go.

Chrisw77 I found an article about pre-exercise ingestion of carbohydrates that you might find interesting. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22525771 Both studies used “well-trained male cyclists”, one study had 10 subjects and the other had 9. Small groups but interesting results. To my mind, the time differences may well be statistically significant but are they important? By that I mean, does a few minute difference MAKE a difference that affects performance? Just putting that out there. As for “topping up glycogen stores”, I imagine that the body has already done that naturally. There is, of course, no harm done but hasn’t carbohydrate loading prior to exercise for the athletic community been de-bunked? The body works quickly .... excess calories go to fat. Other than glycogen, there is no “holding area” for glucose and its sugary cousins. I don’t see this as a problem because muscle loves to use fat as an energy source.
