Is it normal to just feel completely zapped after starting at the gym? It’s been a week since my first gym visit...I’ve been 3 times and have done some elliptical work outs at home in between. I am just so tired and my weight has gone up a little since starting which I’m guessing is normal but it is still frustrating. I have a number I want to get to (stupid I know) and then if I go up a little from there it’s ok. I’m feeling a little down today...one day I think I can do this woe and exercise forever and then the next I feel like I’m done and want to give up.

Not sure if it will reduce fatigue, but 3 weight lifting sessions a week is a lot. The lifting will increase water retention hence the gain (most likely). Also what LSG417 says - eat some protein before the workout. Actually, carbs are usually recommended, but you can eat anything about 200 calories worth and get the loading benefit. If you look at how much time you are exercising, it might explain your exhaustion - if you are suddenly burning a lot more calories than you take in, you are going to be tired.

You are probably building up too much lactic acid in your muscles. Make sure you are drinking enough water before, during, and after your workout. It is temporary and will resolve itself. It is caused by exercising too intensely without working up to it. Eating lean protein after your workout will help as well.

Lots of great advice already, just repeating here. Don't cut back on number of workout days, but try taking it easier once or twice a week and see if your body can catch up. I know it's hard, but shoot for 8 hours a day of sleep. That's when your body improves, and it needs to go into deep sleep to get it right.

Make sure you're getting enough electrolytes. That can really zap you if you're not getting enough :-)

I hope your energy comes back. With the low iron I'm dealing with I can sympathize with being tired. If you stay exhausted after a couple of weeks and you've tried the other suggestions here on fueling before and after your workout, you may re-check with the doc. If you're taking an iron supplement you shouldn't be low, but you know yourself, if this is just not normal it never hurts to get a check-up. There are thyroid issues that can cause you to be fatigued also. Good luck!!
